A recent study compared essays written by secondary school students with those generated by the language model ChatGPT. The setback faced by ChatGPT version 3.5 in the Bavarian Abitur, a secondary school test in Germany, was overcome by its successor, version 4, which achieved a solid grade nearly six months later. Titled “A large-scale comparison of human-written versus ChatGPT-generated essays,” the study explored the impact of AI-generated content on education, highlighting the potential of these new tools for schools.
Researchers analyzed machine-generated texts and student essays based on the Ministry of Education of Lower Saxony guidelines. The study revealed that both versions of the OpenAI chatbot scored higher than students, suggesting that education should not ignore the potential of these new AI tools.
