‘Indian Women Work Longer Hours,’ Asserts Edelweiss Boss Radhika Gupta in Response to Narayana Murthy’s 70-Hour Work Advice

Title: Indian Women Challenge Narayana Murthy’s Controversial Work Hours Advice

Subtitle: Female labor force statistics highlight the exceptional dedication of Indian women

Infosys co-founder N. R. Narayana Murthy recently sparked controversy with his advice for Indian youth to work 70 hours a week in a podcast with Mohandas Pai. However, his view received sharp criticism, particularly from Radhika Gupta, the MD & CEO of Edelweiss. Gupta argued that Murthy’s advice failed to acknowledge the significant contribution of Indian women who work tirelessly both in offices and homes. She emphasized that Indian women work more than 70 hours a week, without demanding overtime compensation, to build India and raise the next generation of Indians.

Statistics from the International Labour Organization show a decline in female labor participation in India. Between 1999 and 2000, female labor participation stood at 34.1%, which decreased to 27.2% in 2011-12. The decline is more pronounced in rural areas, with a decrease from 26.5% in 2009-10 to 25.3% in 2011–12. However, the IT sector has witnessed a significant increase in female employees, with women now representing 37% of the total IT workforce in India.

In the past decade alone, the Indian IT sector has added over 1 million women employees. According to the Economic Times, TCS has 220,000 women employees, comprising 36% of its overall workforce, while Infosys, led by Murthy, has 130,000 female staff, accounting for 39.4% of its workforce.

It is essential to recognize the challenges faced by these women employees, who juggle between office and home responsibilities, often enduring long and tiresome commutes. Their dedication is remarkable, and they work tirelessly without taking time off, even on weekends. The support from leaders such as Mr. Murthy perpetuates this imbalanced ecosystem.

The reactions to Radhika Gupta’s tweet echo the sentiments of solidarity and appreciation for Indian women’s dedication. Social media users expressed agreement and shared personal stories highlighting the relentless efforts of these women. However, some comments also emphasized the need to address patriarchy and provide equal treatment from birth to ensure lasting change.

In conclusion, while Narayana Murthy’s call to work 70 hours a week has drawn criticism, it is crucial to recognize the exceptional dedication and contribution of Indian women, who work tirelessly to build the nation and nurture future generations. The statistics and personal accounts highlight the challenges they face and emphasize the need for a more inclusive and supportive work environment.
