Scientists Can Determine Your Gaze by Listening to Your Ears

Posted on November 24, 2023 By Haley Bennett

Duke University Scientists Discover Unbelievable Connection Between Eye and Ear Movements

In a remarkable study exploring the interaction between vision and hearing, a team of scientists from Duke University has revealed an astonishing link between the movement of eyes and sounds produced by the ears.

Led by senior author Jennifer Groh, PhD, a professor at Duke University, the study builds upon the team’s earlier finding in 2018 that ears produce inaudible noises when the eyes move.

The researchers discovered that these inaudible sounds can be utilized to determine where a person is looking, effectively revealing the direction of an individual’s gaze. What’s more, by knowing where someone is looking, the researchers were able to predict the waveform of the subtle ear sounds.

Additionally, the study found that analysis of the ear sounds revealed unique signatures for different directions of movement, which allowed the researchers to accurately calculate where the participants were looking.

“This discovery opens up intriguing possibilities, including the potential development of new clinical tests for hearing,” said Stephanie Lovich, one of the study’s lead authors and a graduate student at Duke.

Furthermore, the team is exploring whether these ear sounds play a role in perception, particularly in individuals with hearing or vision loss.

The findings of this study offer a unique insight into the intricate connections between the senses and pave the way for further investigations into the role of these ear sounds in human perception. The research team’s findings were published in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

This groundbreaking research could have significant implications for understanding human perception and developing new clinical tests for hearing. The study conducted under the leadership of senior author Jennifer Groh at Duke University offers valuable insights into the link between eye and ear movement, opening the door to a deeper understanding of human senses and perception.
