Rephrase the title:’Rohit switched off in Hyderabad’ – Michael Vaughan claims India wouldn’t have lost first Test under Virat Kohli’s captaincy

On January 25, India welcomed England as the visitors sought to become the first visiting team in over 12 years to win a Test series in India. They got off to the perfect start, winning the first match in Hyderabad by 28 runs.

After scoring just 236 in the first innings and conceding a 190-run lead, all signs were pointing to a heavy defeat for the visitors but Ollie Pope had other ideas. He struck 196 in the side’s second innings, wiping out the deficit and setting India 231 to win.

In the fourth innings, debutant spinner Tom Hartley was the story as he took 7/62 to bundle India out for 202 and secure a famous victory.

After the match, much of the praise was reserved for Pope and Hartley, but India’s batting came under fire, as well as the captaincy of Rohit Sharma. For long periods in the third innings, India’s tactics allowed the game to drift with no one taking the initiative and trying anything different.

According to former England captain-turned-pundit Michael Vaughan, India would have performed better had previous captain Virat Kohli been in charge. Speaking on the Club Prairie Fire podcast, he said,

India miss Virat Kohli’s captaincy massively in Test cricket. Under Virat’s captaincy, India wouldn’t have lost 1st Test. Rohit is a legend and a great player, but I felt he just switched off completely.

Rohit Sharma took over captaincy of the Indian Test side in 2022, and has often turned to Kohli for inputs and tips on the field in both red-ball and white-ball cricket. Kohli did not play in Hyderabad, having withdrawn from the squad for the first two Tests due to personal reasons. The second Test is set to get underway in Visakhapatnam on Friday, February 2.
