Rephrase the title:’Maybe Imran Khan was right…’ – Basit Ali on Pakistan’s shocking fielding against New Zealand

On Friday, Pakistan took on New Zealand in the first T20I at Eden Park in Auckland, in the first of their five-match bilateral series in the shortest format.

On his Pakistan captaincy debut, Shaheen Shah Afridi won the toss and chose to field first. New Zealand got off to a flying start as opener Finn Allen smashed 34 off 15 balls. After that, half-centuries from Daryl Mitchell (61) and Kane Williamson (57) helped the Kiwis score 226/8. In reply, Pakistan were bowled out for 180 in 18 overs, handing the hosts a 46-run victory.

Debutant Abbas Afridi picked up three wickets in the first innings, but Pakistan might have been disappointed with their efforts in the field as a whole.

New Zealand were playing five bowlers, and after Shaheen got rid of Devon Conway in the first over, Pakistan had a chance to pick up a couple more wickets and really put the pressure on New Zealand. However, they let a few golden chances slip.

In the fifth over, Kane Williamson hit a shot in the air straight to Babar Azam, but the former captain let the ball slip through his hands and the batter got a life on 9. In the tenth over, Williamson was dropped again, on 39 as Iftikhar Ahmed juggled the ball but could not hold on at short third man.

Pakistan’s wastefulness in the field came in for some harsh criticism from former international Basit Ali, an opinionated pundit. Williamson was eventually dismissed for 57, as Abbas Afridi’s slower ball deceived the Kiwi captain and he was caught in the deep by Fakhar Zaman.
