Is New Zealand all-rounder Rachin Ravindra named after Sachin Tendulkar and Rahul Dravid?

Posted on November 14, 2023 By Haley Bennett

New Zealand kicked off their 2023 Cricket World Cup campaign on a high with Rachin Ravindra and Devon Conway leading the way as they beat reigning England by 9 wickets in the curtain raiser.

Ravindra remained not out at 123 off 96 balls, while Conway also remained unbeaten at 152 off 121 balls as New Zealand chased down 283 runs in just 36.2 overs.

With the ball, Ravindra was expensive, leaking 76 runs in 10 overs but managed to get rid of dangerous Harry Brook for just 25 runs.

Ravindra became only the 4th New Zealand batter to score a century on his World Cup debut and hit the fastest World Cup century as a Kiwi batter. He has since scored two more centuries in the tournament, becoming the first batter to smash three hundreds in his debut World Cup.

Rachin Ravindra was born on November 18, 1999, in Wellington, New Zealand, with his father Ravi Krishnamurthy hailing from Bengaluru, India.

Ravindra is a genuine all-rounder, a slow left-arm orthodox bowler who has been batting in the top order of late. He has taken 13 wickets in as many ODI matches and has scored 312 runs at an average of 39.

Ravindra’s consistent performance prompted the selectors to choose him in the Kiwi squad for the 2023 Cricket World Cup.

On his ODI debut, Ravindra did not bowl and came out to bat at number 7, scoring 49 off 52 balls in a match against Sri Lanka. New Zealand eventually were bowled out for 274, but they defended their total comfortably as Henry Shipley’s fifer helped them bowl out the Lankans for just 76 runs.

The 23-year-old has scored 712 runs in 16 matches at an average of 47.47 and taken 15 wickets at an economy rate of 6.15.

Ravindra’s stellar performance has undoubtedly made him a breakout star in New Zealand cricket, and he will be one to watch as the Cricket World Cup unfolds.
