Australian all-rounder Cameron Green is currently playing for Australia in the second Test against West Indies despite testing positive for COVID-19.

Ahead of the Test at the Gabba, Brisbane, Green and coach Andrew McDonald had caught the virus, while Travis Head, who plays in the middle-order in Tests, tested negative on the eve of the second Test after testing positive after the first Test.

However, Cricket Australia’s (CA) decision to allow Green to play the match despite carrying the virus has drawn mixed reactions.

The Sporting News breaks down why CA allowed Green to play in Brisbane against the West Indies.

Why did Cricket Australia allow Cameron Green to play the second Test?

Until they produce a negative test result, Green and McDonald will be kept apart from the rest of the group.

Green will be allowed to participate in the Test as per Cricket Australia protocols, even if he did not receive a negative result. The Gabba features an extra changing room that was utilized at the peak of COVID-19.

“Cameron Green and Andrew McDonald will be separated from the group until they return a negative test. It will not hinder Green taking part in or McDonald attending the match in line with CA protocols,” CA mentioned in a statement.

What must also be taken into consideration is the fact that although Green tested positive, his situation is asymptomatic.

Ahead of the second Test, vice-captain Steve Smith confirmed that Green was fine.

“He’s fine. No physical drama at all – just tested positive. Him and Andrew McDonald are both fine,” Smith said.

In another video posted by CA on their official X (formerly Twitter) account, Green was jokingly shooed away by Josh Hazlewood to prevent the COVID positive player from indulging in team celebrations after the fall of a wicket.

What’s happening in the Gabba Test between Australia and West Indies?

The Brisbane Test is a day-night, pink-ball Test between Australia and West Indies.

The visitors won the toss and opted to bat first, but lost half their side in the 1st Session, heading into Tea on Day 1 at 64-5 with Mitchell Starc taking three wickets and Josh Hazlewood and Pat Cummins bagging one each.
