New propulsion system inspired by whale’s tail could drive ships toward a more eco-friendly maritime industry

Posted on November 25, 2023February 17, 2026 By Corey Powell

Pioneering Wave Devouring Propulsion (WDP) could revolutionize the maritime industry. Based on the structure and movement of a whale’s tail fins, this groundbreaking concept aims to harness wave energy for ship propulsion while reducing greenhouse gas emissions. The innovative technology has the potential to transform the industry by propelling ships with the boundless energy of waves.

Dr. Liang Yang, the lead researcher and lecturer in marine renewable energy systems at Cranfield University, expressed optimism about the transformative potential of WDP in advancing maritime sustainability. He noted that WDP is not just reducing emissions but is also contributing to carbon reduction targets and aligning with the shipping industry’s broader sustainable development goals.

WDP technology offers a range of advantages, including reducing fuel costs and enhancing marine craft propulsion. It is also designed to integrate into hybrid propulsion systems powered by electricity, hydrogen, or fossil fuels. The academic study provides a comprehensive review of flapping foils for Wave Devouring Propulsion while showcasing the efficiency and low resistance achieved by marine equipment equipped with a flapping foil system.

The research team’s findings were published in the journal Renewable and Sustainable Energy Reviews, underscoring the potential of WDP to take a pioneering step toward a more sustainable and eco-friendly future for ship propulsion systems.

The WDP technology has the potential to bring a new era to the maritime industry. The research team’s findings could play a crucial role in advancing a greener future for ship propulsion systems. TechTimes.com All rights reserved. Do not reproduce without permission.
