According to experts, AI Chatbots may not replace human jobs and here’s why.

Posted on November 5, 2023 By Haley Bennett

AI Chatbots Not Necessarily Coming for Your Job, Say Experts

Artificial intelligence (AI) chatbots have become a game-changer in workplaces, sparking discussions about their potential impact on human jobs. In an article published in The Conversation, Kai Riemer and Sandra Peter from the University of Sydney shed light on the surge of interest in AI tools and the introduction of advanced AI chatbots like ChatGPT.

Contrary to popular belief, the experts argue that AI may not necessarily replace human jobs. They caution against over-reliance on the technology’s “intelligence” and emphasize the importance of verifying chatbot outputs. While AI chatbots demonstrate dedication to their tasks, they can sometimes provide plausible but factually unsupported responses. Therefore, it is prudent to apply critical thinking skills when using these tools.

Although AI chatbots have a probabilistic nature and lack true comprehension at a human level, preliminary studies suggest their integration into the workforce yields promising results. For example, a pilot project at Westpac showed a remarkable 46% increase in productivity for software coding tasks without compromising quality. Similarly, a study by the Boston Consulting Group revealed significant enhancements in problem-solving and ideation when consultants collaborated with AI chatbots.

In another case, a US software company successfully utilized an AI chatbot to streamline its operations by assisting in crafting client proposals. The chatbot extracted pertinent information from internal files to generate suitable responses, improving the company’s efficiency.

Riemer and Peter envision a future where companies can customize generative AI models using their own data, deploying them in specialized roles like coding, consulting, or customer service. They emphasize the need for AI fluency, considering it an essential skill similar to working with PCs.

The experts conclude that while workers may fear automation will replace their jobs, AI chatbots are more likely to redefine job descriptions rather than completely eliminate human roles.

This shift in the workforce raises the importance of developing proficiency in working alongside AI technology. As companies continue to adopt AI chatbots, understanding and utilizing this technology will become essential.
