Rephrase the title:’Failure should be called what it is’ – Aakash Chopra slams Ben Stokes’ captaincy in second Test against India

On Monday, the second Test of five between India and England came to a conclusion on day four in Visakhapatnam. The hosts secured a 106-run win, levelling the series after England had won by 28 runs in Hyderabad.

After winning the toss, India posted 396 in their first innings, led by Yashasvi Jaiswal’s 209. In the second innings, a haul of 6/45 from Jasprit Bumrah helped them take a 143-run lead before Shubman Gill’s century ensured the visitors needed 399 in the fourth innings for victory.

England made a good fight of the run chase, but were finally bowled out for 292 to hand India the win.

While much of the focus was on India’s performance, and to an extent the approach of England’s batters in the fourth innings, former India opener Aakash Chopra criticised the captaincy of Ben Stokes, as well as England’s team selection. Speaking on his YouTube channel, Chopra said,

Apart from some innovative field settings, he is not an aggressive captain. The cult of Ben Stokes has become so big that I don’t see any whispers in the English media saying he is getting it wrong. In the first innings, he did not bowl Rehan Ahmed for 60 overs. In the second innings, he forgot Shoaib Bashir. But it’s okay, no one talks about it.

In fact, it was a huge tactical blunder that you did not play two fast bowlers. You played just one, and even speculated about playing an all-spin attack. This was a pitch for two pacers. But that is a failure to read the pitch, and a failure should be called what it is.

Chopra also went on to criticise the English skipper’s batting, saying Stokes should be questioned for not batting up the order, as “batting with the tail means if you score runs you are a hero and if you don’t people will say, what can he do with just the tail.”

The third Test will begin in Rajkot on February 15.
