India pace bowling spearhead Jasprit Bumrah has been reprimanded by the International Cricket Council (ICC) following his inappropriate conduct in the first Test in Hyderabad against England.

Bumrah breached Level 1 of the ICC Code of Conduct following his actions on Day 4 of the first Test against England.

The 30-year-old deliberately got in the way of English batsman Ollie Pope as he was attempting a run, which led to “inappropriate physical contact.”

ICC hands Jasprit Bumrah one demerit point

According to ICC, this was Bumrah’s first offence in 24 months, which results in the India speedster receiving just one demerit point.

Here is what ICC said in their official statement:

The pacer was found to have breached Article 2.12 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, which relates to “inappropriate physical contact with a Player, Player Support Personnel, Umpire, Match Referee or any other person (including a spectator during an International Match.”

Since it was Bumrah’s first offence in 24 months, one demerit point has been added to his record.

The charge was levelled by on-field umpires Paul Reiffel and Chris Gaffaney, third umpire Marais Erasmus and fourth umpire Rohan Pandit.

Level 1 violations typically result in one or two demerit points, an official reprimand as a minimum, and a maximum penalty of 50% of the player’s match fee.

There was no need for a formal hearing because Bumrah entered a guilty plea and accepted the punishment imposed by Richie Richardson of the ICC Elite Panel of Match Referees.

What next for Jasprit Bumrah?

Bumrah was in great form in the first Test against England, picking up six wickets and causing all sorts of trouble to the batsman on a pitch that didn’t provide any assistance to pacers.

For all his bowling exploits, though, India ended up on the losing side as the visitors clinched a 28-run victory in Hyderabad.

Bumrah, as vice-captain of the side, will once again be determined to lead his team’s bowling attack from the front and aid the spinners in the best possible way. India will face England in the second Test on February 2 in Visakhapatnam.
