In a groundbreaking move, the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) is set to launch its hefty communication satellite GSAT-20 with the help of SpaceX’s Falcon-9 rocket, marking their first collaboration. This deployment is scheduled for the middle of this year.

Weighing in at about 4,700 kg, GSAT-20 is a heavyweight satellite designed to enhance the capabilities of telecom providers, enabling them to offer super-fast Internet services. This satellite surpasses the launch capacity of ISRO’s most potent rocket, LVM-3. Previously, for heavier satellites exceeding 4,000 kg, India relied on the European launch provider Arianespace. However, with the retirement of Arianespace’s Ariane-5 in July last year, the need for an alternative arose.

Falcon-9: SpaceX’s Reusable Rocket

The Falcon-9 rocket from SpaceX, known for its reusability, can handle double the weight of GSAT-20, exceeding 8,300 kg, making it an ideal choice for this mission. Having completed 285 flights to various destinations in space, Falcon-9’s reliability is a key factor in ISRO’s decision. This collaboration is made possible by NewSpace India Limited (NSIL), ISRO’s commercial arm, which entered into a launch agreement with SpaceX last year.

GSAT-20, initially scheduled for launch in 2018 and then in 2020, is poised to address high-speed connectivity gaps in rural and remote areas of India. Beyond terrestrial coverage, the satellite aims to provide in-flight internet services. NSIL anticipates that GSAT-20’s high data transmission capability will cover the entire country, including remote regions like the Andaman and Nicobar Islands and Lakshadweep.
