In his latest post, Elon Musk showcased how audio and video calls can be done on the X/Twitter app. The billionaire shared a user’s tweet that displayed a 9 second looping clip. The nifty feature is accessible in the upright section of the DM box. There is currently no official data on the number of users who call via X. However, Musk’s earlier pledge to ditch cellular networks for X will draw a few takers. On January 3, 2024, Starlink launched its very first batch of direct-to-phone satellites. A week ago, the Tesla boss claimed to send his Twitter post via SpaceX Direct to Cell satellites.

The director of satellite engineering at SpaceX, Ben Longmier, attested to the successful deployment of the SpaceX network. In a bunch of tweets, Longmier posted a picture of a tree cover while he was engaged in exchanging DMs over the Starlink satellite network. He noted that the cell signal at his house, which is 15 miles off Silicon Valley, had “by far the strongest signal.” Musk reacted to his post with a congratulatory tweet. Responding to a user query, Longmier stated that SpaceX will provide 4G LTE when it rolls out for the public. Currently, direct-to-cell for global access has 7 international partners, including TMobile in the US.
The team is really making progress.
Also interesting that these sats have by far the strongest cell signal at my house, just 15 miles outside the heart of Silicon Valley.

In his quest to transform X into an everything app, Musk is ahead of his rivals with a string of satellites providing a powerful network for telecommunication. But at what cost? Probably he needs to resolve the environmental impact first rather than diss about his competitors’ AI models and provoke Zuck for a cage fight.
