In the Boxing Day Test at Centurion, South Africa took on an Indian side looking to win their first-ever Test series in the country.

But it was not to be for the tourists, who were bowled out for 245 in their first time at the crease, before crumbling for 131 to hand the hosts victory by an innnings and 32 runs. Despite the favourable conditions for bowlers, the Proteas managed to score a mammoth 408 in their only innings.

The major contributor for the hosts was opener Dean Elgar, who scored a magnificent 185. But one of the most important partnerships during the innings came between Elgar and debutant David Bedingham (56), who put on 131 for the 4th wicket to take South Africa to within one run of India’s first innings total.

‘Changed my technique to copy Virat Kohli’ – David Bedingham

Ahead of the second Test in Cape Town, Bedingham interacted with reporters at the ground. According to the Indian Express, the 29-year-old spoke about his idols growing up, saying,

Definitely Herschelle Gibbs. Jacques Kallis was from my school [Wynberg Boys’ High] … or, I was from his school. So I tended to watch those two.

My two favourites among Indian players are Sharma and Kohli. I think when I was between 13-18, I was trying to mould my technique like theirs (Kallis and Gibbs) and when I had a bad game, I changed my technique to copy Kohli’s or try probably Sharma’s.

Despite representing South Africa’s U19 team, Bedingham was left frustrated by the lack of cricketing opportunities in the country, and moved to England to play county cricket for Durham on a Kolpak deal, before returning to his home country and forcing his way into the international setup.

Bedingham’s mountain of first-class runs at an average of nearly 50, in both South African and English conditions, means he has clearly put what he learnt from his idols to good use.

He also acknowledged the role of Ben Stokes in his development, emphasising how the England star taught him how to deal with pressure during his stint with Durham.
