Cricket Matches to be Affected by New ICC Rules
In recent years, cricket matches have been stretching for long hours due to various delays such as equipment changes, reviews, and third umpire decisions. Even a T20 match can often go on for over four hours. Efforts have been made to cut down on these delays, including a requirement for teams to bring an extra fielder inside the 30-yard circle if they were behind the over-rate after 49 overs during the recently-concluded World Cup.
Now, the ICC has announced a new measure to reduce time-wasting by the bowling side. A stop clock will be used on a trial basis to measure how long teams take between overs to begin bowling again. This measure is set to be implemented in men’s T20Is and ODIs from December 2023 to April 2024. According to the ICC’s press release, if the bowling team is not ready to bowl the next over within 60 seconds of the previous over being completed, a 5-run penalty will be imposed the third time it happens in an innings.
Earlier this year, the Caribbean Premier League (CPL) had its own unique way of tackling this issue, with umpires allowed to show a ‘red card’ to fielding teams who were behind the over rate going into the final two overs of T20 matches, resulting in the removal of one fielder from the ground.
In addition to the new stop clock rule, the ICC has also announced that a player who has transitioned from male to female and has gone through any form of male puberty will not be allowed to take part in women’s international cricket.
These new measures are aimed at improving the efficiency and pace of cricket matches, and are a part of continued efforts to enhance the game for players and fans alike.
