The 2024 edition of the ICC U19 Men’s Cricket World Cup saw Kwena Maphaka establish himself as one of the best young cricketers in the world after displaying some incredible performances.

The 17-year-old left armer’s impressive yorkers and diverse skill set have garnered him high praise and seem to be paving the way for him to eventually join the Proteas senior squad.

Maphaka played his first U19 game for South Africa at the age of 15 and was selected to be a part of South Africa’s squad for the 2022 U19 World Cup. At the tournament, Maphaka played just three out of South Africa’s six games, and picked seven wickets, averaging 18.29 and conceding 5.56 runs per over.

At the 2024 U19 World Cup, Maphaka finished the tournament with 21 wickets, the most by any bowler in the edition, the most by any South African bowler in a single edition, and the second-most by any U19 bowler in a single edition in history.

Maphaka’s haul at the U19 World Cup included three five-fors, the most by any player in a single edition. After that, he participated in three CSA T20 Challenge games for the Lions.

Mumbai Indians sign Kwena Maphaka for IPL 2024

According to a report from Stuart Hess of South African outlet TimesLive, Maphaka has landed in Mumbai and joined the Mumbai Indians pre-season training camp after leaving South Africa on Tuesday (March 19).

“In hasty arrangements, with the help of his Gauteng Lions teammate Kagiso Rabada, Maphaka went from classes at St Stithians on Monday to boarding a flight on Tuesday to join one of the glamour teams in cricket’s most lucrative competition,” Hess mentioned in his report.

Inquiring about Maphaka’s services, the Mumbai Indians called Kagiso Rabada, who represents Maphaka through his KGR sports agency.

It is unclear exactly what his role at the Mumbai Indians is — whether he will play for MI or serve as an apprentice — but it is known he will be there for the entire competition, which concludes the final week of May. Social media users have conjectured that the 17-year-old fast bowler will be a net bowler.

Maphaka had to finish the visa application quickly in order to travel to India with his mother. To ensure that Maphaka’s academic performance is not negatively impacted, MI have made arrangements for tutoring.
