As we enter the business end of the Africa Cup of Nations, it’s not hard to spot the theme of the tournament.

Heavyweight contenders being dumped out early, with others staying in the competition by the skin of their teeth.

Hosts Ivory Coast are just about still in situ, having knocked out holders Senegal in the last 16 on penalties. Egypt suffered the same fate against DR Congo.

Nigeria are many people’s tip to march all the way to glory in Abidjan on February 11, but it’s also been a tournament to celebrate upset successes, with Cape Verde into the quarterfinals for the first time their history.

By the time South Africa downed Morocco 2-0 in the final game of the first knockout stage, the top five sides in the FIFA rankings had all been sent packing. By contrast, 117th in the world Angola romped into a last-eight clash with Nigeria.

Here’s a rundown of the teams knocked out of AFCON 2023 so far and information on when the final stages will take place.
