On February 23, Mumbai faced off against Baroda in the quarterfinal of the 2024 Ranji Trophy, as they aimed to win a 46th title in the team’s history.

Electing to bat first, Mumbai were in trouble early, as they slipped to 99/4 and 120/5. A 181-run stand between Musheer Khan (203*) and Hardik Tamore (57) then resurrected the innings as they posted 384.

Spinner Shams Mulani then took 4 wickets to help Mumbai take a first-innings lead before batting again. On day five, they were 337/9 when No.11 Tushar Deshpande came out to join No.10 Tanush Kotian at the crease.

What is the highest tenth wicket partnership in first-class cricket?

Batting for 40 overs together, each batter scored at a strike rate of over 90, as they put on a massive 232 runs for the final wicket. Deshpande was the last man dismissed, for 123 as Kotian remained unbeaten on 120. It was the second-highest partnership in Ranji Trophy cricket, behind Ajay Sharma and Maninder Singh 233 for Delhi vs Bombay in 1991/92.

This was also only the second instance in first-class cricket of No.10 and No.11 scoring a century in the same batting innings, with the first coming in 1946 as Chandu Sarwate and Shute Banerjee scored 124* and 121 respectively for Indians vs Surrey.

The highest tenth-wicket partnership in first-class history remains 307, put on by Alan Kiffax and Hal Hooper for New South Wales vs Victoria in 1928/29. In Test cricket, Joe Root and James Anderson’s stand of 198 against India in 2014 is the highest.
