Rephrase the title:’We looked at Ashwin, Ravindra Jadeja and Axar Patel’: What did Brendon McCullum and England learn from India’s spinners?

Last Friday, India and England faced off in the second Test of their five-match bilateral series at the Dr YS Rajasekhara Reddy Stadium in Visakhapatnam. The hosts secured a 106-run win, levelling the series at 1-1 after England had won by 28 runs in Hyderabad.

India rode on stellar individual performances from Yashasvi Jaiswal (209), Jasprit Bumrah (6/45) and Shubman Gill (104) to get the result, an important one for a side which was one of the most inexperienced in years.

England had put up a brave fight in the second Test, and outplayed India in the first. On Friday, head coach Brendon McCullum spoke to Sky Sports about the rest of the series.

‘We looked at Ashwin, Ravindra Jadeja and Axar Patel’: What did Brendon McCullum and England learn from India’s spinners?

Coming into the series, there was much doubt over England’s spin attack, especially in subcontinental conditions. The only experienced member of their quartet was Jack Leach, with Rehan Ahmed just one Test old, and Tom Hartley and Shoaib Bashir debuting in the first and second Test respectively.

Much had been made of Hartley and Bashir’s inclusions in the squad, given that neither one had performed particularly well at the first-class level. McCullum opened up on this aspect during his chat with Sky Sports, saying,

We looked at India’s makeup – (Ravichandran) Ashwin, (Ravindra) Jadeja and Axar Patel – and the points of difference that normal spinners do not possess [in terms of release points and bowling speeds].

We tried to replicate that as best we could. So far so good. We will see where it lands [in the rest of the series] but it is encouraging to see.

England have successfully replicated the high release points of Ashwin and Axar with Bashir and Hartley respectively. While they may not have a bowler who accurately mimics Jadeja’s bowling speed, they have in Rehan Ahmed someone with quite a low release point, like Jadeja.

McCullum also praised the leadership skills of skipper Ben Stokes, particularly for trusting in the team management’s process and giving the young spinners the freedom to play without the pressure of expectation.
