Rephrase the title:’Little late for various reasons’ – Cheteshwar Pujara believes R Ashwin could have played 100th Test earlier

Saurashtra and India middle-order batsman Cheteshwar Pujara has described Ravichandran Ashwin as a “voracious reader” of the game, while also applauding him for his recent milestones such as reaching 500 wickets in Tests.

Ashwin reached the 500-wicket landmark in the ongoing Test series against England, during the third Test which took place in Ranchi. India won the game by a historic 434-run margin.

It was Ashwin’s 98th Test, making him the second-fastest bowler behind Muthiah Muralidaran to reach the milestone, as well as only the second Indian bowler ever to breach 500 wickets in Tests.

He followed that up by taking a match-winning fifer in the fourth Test to help India seal the series. Now, all the attention turns towards the final Test in Dharamsala, which will also mark a memorable occasion for Ashwin as he’ll be featuring in his 100th Test for the country.

‘I am really happy for him’ – Cheteshwar Pujara on Ravichandran Ashwin reaching 100 Tests

Pujara wrote a column for ESPNcricinfo on Monday, March 4, where he talked about Ashwin in detail, sharing his experiences while with him and what set him apart.

Firstly, he described Ashwin as an intelligent cricketer, someone who always keeps his thinking cap on, at all times, in all situations.

I wish I had his incredible memory. His mind is always ticking. Away from cricket, he is a voracious reader, enjoys chess online, and is open to learning new things.

In the ongoing Test series against England, the 37-year-old off-spinner has come under criticism at times, given that he did not register a single five-wicket haul in the first seven innings of the series.

Not just that, but he was also conceding runs pretty cheaply, going for over four runs per over as there was a visible decline in his effectiveness on home soil. Pujara, however, came to Ashwin’s defence.

It is easy to presume that as the lead spinner, especially on home pitches, Ash will deliver most times. But the pressure of that expectation can be immense.

Talking about his 500 wickets and 100 Tests landmark, of which he has already achieved the former and will achieve the latter in the Dharamsala Test, Pujara expressed his happiness over the fact that Ashwin is, at long last, set to play his 100th Test for India, adding that he would be doing so a bit later than expected.

Having just become the second quickest bowler to 500 Test wickets, Ash now deserves another equally significant landmark – of 100 Tests. He’s probably a little late getting there for various reasons. But I am really happy for him. He is someone who has always been ready to take the challenge on and do the hard yards for the team. He deserves it the most.

What next for Ravichandran Ashwin?

Ashwin will be playing his 100th Test for India when he takes the field against England in the fifth and final Test of the series at the HPCA Stadium in Dharamsala.

The match will begin on Thursday, March 7, with the series already in pocket.
