With the Test series between India and England drawing to a close, the attention of cricket fans in the country is starting to turn towards the next event on the calendar; season 17 of the Indian Premier League (IPL).

The schedule for the new edition was released earlier this month, with the first 21 fixtures pencilled in. Chennai Super Kings are set to take on Royal Challengers Bangalore in a southern derby in the season opener.

Mumbai Indians’ first match will be against Gujarat Titans, a much-awaited clash after the seismic off-season trade which saw Hardik Pandya return to his first IPL team.

‘Mumbai always challenges you’ – Hardik Pandya looks forward to a MI comeback

Ahead of the player auction in December, Mumbai Indians announced that they had brought their former player back, in an all-cash deal worth INR 15 crores. Pandya captained GT to the title in 2022, and the final in 2023. Upon his return to MI, the franchise announced that he would be their new captain as well, replacing opening batter Rohit Sharma.

The move left fans of both teams with certain reservations; Gujarat for losing their captain and key all-rounder, and Mumbai for Pandya returning after leaving MI in reportedly disrespectful fashion. Ahead of the new season, though, he has embraced the challenge. Speaking in an interview with Star Sports earlier this month, Pandya had said,

Returning to Mumbai Indians feels like coming back to where it all began. From my journey as a young lad in Baroda to Mumbai, this city has taught me growth, instilling in me humility and resilience.

The city’s love and teachings are invaluable to me, shaping me into the cricketer I am today. Mumbai always challenges you to be better and now with the IPL, I have returned home after 2 years.

Pandya recently returned to competitive action after a few months out with an ankle injury sustained during India’s World Cup match against Bangladesh. He took part in the DY Patil corporate tournament, alongside his individual training regime in Baroda.

In a video released by the Mumbai Indians’ official social media accounts on Friday, he reiterated his excitement to returning, saying, “I’m coming back home, which will always be special. We will make sure we play a brand of cricket which everyone will be proud of, that’s going to a ride no one will forget.”
