The Indian government is set to issue a notice to tech giant Google regarding what it perceives as a contentious response generated by the search engine regarding Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Rajeev Chandrasekhar, Minister of State for Electronics and IT, has labelled the reply from Google’s AI platform, Gemini (formerly Bard), as a clear breach. Responding to a journalist’s post sharing screenshots of Gemini’s responses, Chandrasekhar cited Rule 3(1)(b) of the Intermediary Rules under the IT Act, stating that Gemini’s response also breaches multiple sections of the Criminal Code.
According to a report by the Indian Express, a government official noted that this isn’t the first instance where Google’s AI has produced biased and unlawful responses. The official highlighted a previous incident where the AI platform provided problematic responses to inquiries about PM Modi.
Note how Gemini has been trained, for American non-allies, American allies and Americans? Shame @Google. pic.twitter.com/d0uwXzBPsv

Screenshots shared on X (previously known as Twitter) displayed Gemini’s reply to the question, ‘Is Modi a fascist?’ wherein the generative AI remarked, ‘He has been accused of implementing policies that some experts have characterized as fascist.’
These are direct violations of Rule 3(1)(b) of Intermediary Rules (IT rules) of the IT act and violations of several provisions of the Criminal code. @GoogleAI @GoogleIndia @GoI_MeitY https://t.co/9Jk0flkamN

In the previous year, a user reported that Gemini, previously recognized as Bard, declined to provide a summary of an article from a conservative outlet, citing the alleged dissemination of false information. Google responded at the time, stating, ‘Bard is an experiment trained on diverse publicly available data and produces original responses. These responses do not represent Google’s standpoint.’
