Rephrase the title:Finland Tests Electrofuel Derived From Green Hydrogen for the First Time

Posted on November 25, 2023February 17, 2026 By Corey Powell

E-fuel derived from green hydrogen and carbon dioxide has been successfully tested in Finland, marking a significant advancement in sustainable fuel solutions. The test was conducted on a diesel tractor at AGCO Power’s Linnavuori factory in Nokia, showcasing its potential for heavy road transport, shipping, and machinery.

The E-fuel project, led by VTT, utilized high-temperature electrolysis, carbon capture, and Fischer-Tropsch hydrocarbon synthesis to produce electrofuel on a commercial and industrial scale. This development has enhanced the efficiency of green hydrogen production and presents potential for widespread application after successful pre-commercial scale testing.

The project has produced hundreds of kilograms of synthetic hydrocarbons designed for use as a sustainable transport fuel. Neste, a key collaborator, refined these hydrocarbons into drop-in paraffinic diesel, which was tested on a Valtra T235D tractor equipped with AGCO Power’s 74 LFTN diesel engine. The tractor underwent a comprehensive test drive where fuel consumption and exhaust emissions were meticulously measured, with expectations of meeting or exceeding current road diesel fuel standards.

The successful test of the E-diesel emphasizes the importance of exploring diverse options for emission reduction in agriculture machinery. It provides an environmentally friendly alternative that blends seamlessly with fossil diesel, potentially reducing emissions and fossil fuel usage without relying solely on direct electrification.

The findings of the Nokia test run will be key in assessing the impact of E-diesel on harmful exhaust emissions and its suitability for widespread applications in the future. The promising results of the E-fuel test in Finland represent a significant step forward in the development and implementation of sustainable fuel solutions.
