In his bid to make X/Twitter into an everything app, X’s billionaire boss, Elon Musk, announced something radical. In his latest post, Musk stated that in the coming months, he will discontinue his phone number and exclusively use X as his text and audio/video call app/service. The app launched its audio and video call feature for premium users in October 2023. The feature was initially restricted to iOS devices. The feature is pegged for business and breaking news. According to the Twitter help center’s blog, anyone with at least one Direct Message can contact each other via audio or video call. X claims enhanced privacy for its users, as the calls relayed will be through X’s infrastructure, masking the IP addresses of either party. Musk’s move would mean every employee at X/Twitter, SpaceX, Tesla, and Neuralink adopting X for their primary conversation. The microblogging platform is soon rolling out its payment system as well, along with a suite of other features to make it a comprehensive app like the Chinese everything app WeChat. Next what? An X phone running X? Sounds eerily like something Mukesh Ambani-led Reliance JIO would do in the near future.

Meanwhile, users on X had a mixed response to Elon Musk’s announcement. A few users asked, ‘Doesn’t X need a mobile number to be linked to open an account?’ Another user remarked that, as its boss, he would certainly be exempted from linking a phone number. One user asked how he would be online without a mobile number. A user reminded that Musk owns a private internet company with a truckload of satellites. However, one user’s query remains unanswered: ‘How will the app do two-factor authentication without an active mobile number?’
