Rephrase the title:’Don’t want youngsters to be exposed directly in foreign countries’ – Rohit Sharma on Virat Kohli’s replacement against England

On Thursday, January 25, India will take on England in the first of their five match Test series in Hyderabad, as the visitors look to break the streak of series wins India have had on their own turf.

Bet here on the upcoming India vs England Test series and other cricket matches!

It has been 12 years since a visiting side managed to win a series in India, and England were the last team to do so in 2012. Three players from that series are part of the current squad; batters Jonny Bairstow and Joe Root, and fast bowler James Anderson.

The current Indian team is approaching a transition period, and may perhaps be slightly vulnerable in a few areas, and this series promises to be a hotly-contested one especially with England’s ‘Bazball’ style of play.

‘Don’t want youngsters to be exposed directly in foreign countries’ – Rohit Sharma

Ahead of the series, India were dealt a blow as star batter Virat Kohli withdrew from the squad for personal reasons, meaning he would not be available for the first two Tests. Kohli had travelled with the squad to Hyderabad, but had to leave soon after arriving there.

The focus then shifted to who would replace Kohli at No.4 in the batting lineup. There were rumours floating that a potential door could be opened for Cheteshwar Pujara or Ajinkya Rahane to return, with the likes of B Sai Sudharshan, Sarfaraz Khan and Rajat Patidar also in the mix.

India finally announced that Patidar, Kohli’s teammate at Royal Challengers Bangalore, would be added to the squad and based on captain Rohit Sharma’s comments in the pre-match press conference, could make the starting XI as well. Rohit said,

We thought of going back to an experienced player to fill Kohli’s absence but then when will we give the youngsters the chance as we don’t want them to be exposed directly in foreign countries.

Patidar made his ODI debut against South Africa in December, and is in line to receive his first Test cap tomorrow. At the age of 30, he is not quite a youngster but rather a late bloomer on the international stage. The Madhya Pradesh batter has amassed 4000 first class runs at an average of 46, and scored a stunning 151 for India ‘A’ against England Lions last week.
