Former co-founder of BharatPe, Ashneer Grover, and his wife, Madhuri Jain Grover, have been prevented from boarding a New York-bound flight from Indira Gandhi International Airport today. This action was taken due to a lookout circular (LoC) issued against them by the Economic Offences Wing (EOW).
This LoC was issued as the EOW sought it after filing an FIR against the couple in June, alleging their involvement in misappropriation of funds, causing losses of Rs 81 crore to Resilient Innovations, the parent company of BharatPe. This circular prevents individuals under investigation from leaving the country. Grover and Jain have been directed to appear before the EoW for questioning next week.
According to Zulfiquar Memon of MZM Legal, representing BharatPe, the EoW issued the LoC following a recent status report in the Delhi High Court, which revealed evidence of embezzlement.
In response, Ashneer Grover took to Twitter to explain his side of the story. He mentioned that he had traveled four times since the FIR was filed in May without any issues, making the recent bar on his travel unusual. The Grover couple were eventually allowed to leave as directed by the EOW.
Later this morning, Grover received a summons from the EOW, seven hours after his return from the airport. The entrepreneur stated that he will cooperate with the EOW and prove that he is not a flight risk.
Reactions poured in on social media following these developments, with one user jokingly asking Grover to join the BJP and another praising the artwork in his home. Another user even commented on the free publicity Grover was receiving.
