India again met with a disappointment in a World Cup knockout match as they lost to Australia in the final of the recently-concluded edition of the tournament.

Australia extended their record of most ODI World Cup trophies to six, defeating India in the final by six wickets.

Opting to bowl first in a high-octane game, Pat Cummins and Co. cashed in on the toss advantage, restricting India to a total of 240 runs.

While Australia looked in a spot of bother after being reduced to 47/3 in the second innings, Travis Head counterattacked his way out of trouble, smashing a title-winning century.

In many ways, the pitch was the centre of discussion and everyone expected the team winning the toss to bat first. However, Cummins opted to bowl first and Ashwin feels Australia read the pitch better.

Interestingly, India captain Rohit Sharma had said during the toss that he would’ve batted first.

I was flabbergasted – Ashwin recalls George Bailey explaining why Aussies batted first

Ashwin, who was part of the World Cup 2023 squad and played only one match, uploaded a review video on India’s performance on his official YouTube channel.

One fascinating detail that Ashwin revealed was his chat with the Australia chairman of selectors George Bailey. As stated by Ashwin, he asked Bailey why did Australia opted to bowl first and went against the norm of setting a total in a high-pressure game.

He was met with a response with Bailey giving him details on the difference in red soil and black soil pitches and that Australia knew that the surface would become easier to bat in the second innings. Ashwin said:

Australia totally deceived me personally, I had a chat with George Bailey during the mid innings, I asked him why didn’t you guys bat first like you always do – he answered back, we have played IPL & Bilateral series here a lot – red soil disintegrates but not black soil & it gets better under lights – no impact on dew on red soil but black soil has good turn in afternoon and then it will be a concrete in night. I was flabbergasted listening to that.

Final was a tactical masterclass by Pat Cummins – Ravichandran Ashwin

Additionally, the off-spinner praised Australia captain Pat Cummins for the way he implemented his strategies in the summit clash. He lauded his selection of field placements, while also praising the line and length at which he chose to bowl.

Notably, Cummins took two wickets in the final, dismissing in-form batters Shreyas Iyer and Virat Kohli

“Final was a tactical masterclass by Cummins, he had 4-5 fielding setup, similar to an off spinner, hitting stump line – he bowled only 3 balls in the 6 meter mark towards the stump line as not allowing batters to drive – he bowled all overs without mid-off, a masterclass,” Ashwin mentioned.
