India Faces Largest Data Breach in History: Personal Information of 81.5 Crore Indians Exposed on Dark Web
In what is potentially the biggest data breach ever to occur in India, personal information including names and phone numbers of 81.5 crore Indians has been discovered on the dark web. The breach was unveiled by a hacker known as ‘pwn0001,’ who openly advertised the stolen data on the dark web. It is believed that this data was sourced from the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) during COVID-19 testing. The leaked information includes crucial details such as Aadhaar and passport numbers, as well as names, phone numbers, and both temporary and permanent addresses of millions of Indians. According to the hacker, this data originated from the ICMR’s COVID-19 testing records.
The news of the breach first came to light when ‘pwn0001′ posted about it on Breach Forums, a hacking crime forum, on October 9. Shockingly, the hacker claimed to have access to 81.5 crore “Indian Citizen Aadhaar & Passport” records.
The discovery of this data breach was first made by Resecurity, a specialized American agency in cybersecurity and intelligence. They detected the breach and alerted the concerned authorities.
To address the breach, the Computer Emergency Response Team of India (CERT-In) has already informed the ICMR about the incident. It is essential for immediate action to be taken to mitigate any potential harm caused by this breach.
Unfortunately, this is not the first time a major medical institution in India has suffered a breach. Earlier this year, cybercriminals hacked into the servers of the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), gaining control of over 1TB of data and demanding a significant ransom. As a result, the hospital had to resort to manual record-keeping for 15 days, causing significant disruptions.
The scale and severity of this latest breach highlight the urgent need for robust cybersecurity measures and heightened vigilance in protecting sensitive personal information. The Indian government and relevant agencies must take immediate steps to investigate the breach, ensure the security of citizens’ data, and prevent such incidents from occurring in the future.
This breach serves as a reminder for individuals to remain cautious and vigilant about their online presence. It is crucial to regularly update passwords, enable multi-factor authentication, and be wary of suspicious emails or messages that could potentially lead to phishing attacks.
In a time when the digital world plays an increasingly significant role in our lives, cybersecurity has become a critical aspect of our collective security. It is the responsibility of both individuals and organizations to prioritize data protection and implement stringent security measures to prevent such breaches from occurring.
