The International Cricket Council (ICC) has announced the latest inductees into its prestigious Hall of Fame for 2023. The Hall of Fame was established by the ICC in 2009 to honor the achievements of some of the game’s greatest players. This year’s inductees include Aravinda de Silva from Sri Lanka, Virender Sehwag and Diana Edulji from India.
Diana Edulji’s induction is particularly historic as she becomes the first Indian female cricketer to receive this honor. She is only the twelfth woman overall to be inducted into the Hall of Fame.
The ICC statement recognizes Edulji as ‘a trailblazer both on and off the field’. She began her sports career playing basketball and table tennis at the junior national level before switching to cricket. Edulji went on to represent Railways at the domestic level in India before breaking into the national team as one of the premier left-arm orthodox bowlers of her time.
After retiring from her playing career, Edulji was presented with India’s Arjuna Award in 1983 and the Padma Shri in 2002. Her work as an administrator with Western Railways and the BCCI has helped improve the condition of women cricketers in the country. In 2017, she became the first woman to be appointed to the BCCI’s selection committee.
The 2023 Hall of Fame inductees have made significant contributions to the sport and their recognition is well-deserved. This announcement comes as a testament to their talent and impact on the game of cricket.
