Bangladesh vs Sri Lanka: Controversial Dismissal in World Cup Match

In a highly anticipated match of the 2023 World Cup, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka clashed at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi on Monday. The captain of the Bangladesh team, Shakib Al Hasan, won the toss and chose to bowl.

At the 25th over, with Sri Lanka’s score at 135/3, controversy erupted. Bangladesh’s skipper dismissed Sadeera Samarawickrama, leaving the Lankans four wickets down. Angelo Mathews was due to bat next, but his helmet strap broke, prompting him to call for a replacement from the dressing room.

Taking advantage of the situation, Shakib appealed to the umpires for Mathews to be given a ‘timed out’ dismissal. Surprisingly, the umpires agreed to the appeal, making Mathews the first player in international cricket to be given out in this fashion.

The Sporting News provides a comprehensive explanation of the different modes of dismissal in cricket, including this unique situation. For more information on Mathews’ dismissal and the concept of ‘timed out’, visit The Sporting News article.

The 10 Modes of Dismissal in Cricket

1) Bowled: One of the more common dismissals, this occurs when the bowler knocks the batsman’s wicket down with the ball, regardless of whether it touched the bat first.

2) Caught: Another common mode of dismissal, this happens when a fielder catches the ball after it has been struck by the batsman, before it touches the ground.

3) Hit the ball twice: An extremely rare mode of dismissal, it occurs when the batsman intentionally strikes the ball twice before being touched by a fielder.

4) Hit wicket: Increasingly common in modern cricket, this dismissal occurs when the batter knocks down their own wicket while attempting a shot.

5) Leg before wicket: This dismissal takes place when the batter uses their leg or pad to prevent the ball from striking the wicket.

6) Obstructing the field: A rare dismissal where the batter interferes with the ball’s path or prevent a fielder from collecting it.

7) Run out: A common mode of dismissal, this happens when a fielder puts down the wicket while the batsman is out of their ground.

8) Stumped: Similar to a run out, this dismissal occurs when the batsman is not attempting a run and overbalances, allowing the wicketkeeper to put down the wicket.

9) Timed out: An extremely rare dismissal, it occurs when a batsman is not ready to face the next ball within three minutes of their dismissal. Angelo Mathews’ recent dismissal was the first instance of this in international cricket.

10) Retired out: Increasingly used in T20 cricket, a batter can retire out voluntarily for tactical reasons. However, their innings can only be resumed with the opposing captain’s consent.
