Julia Louis-Dreyfus shares how ChatGPT mistakenly identified her as Julia Roberts in AI-assisted speech.

Posted on November 26, 2023 By Haley Bennett

Julia Louis-Dreyfus, the celebrated former “Veep” star and winner of the entertainment honor at the WSJ. Magazine 2023 Innovator Awards, recently shared an amusing and unexpected twist in her speech preparation process. According to Fox News, the 56-year-old actress used the assistance of the AI chatbot ChatGPT-4 to craft her acceptance speech for the prestigious event.

In her speech, Louis-Dreyfus humorously acknowledged that as an entertainment innovator, she is very busy innovating and turned to ChatGPT-4. She went on to say that she was mistaken for Julia Roberts due to an amusing mix-up. On stage, the AI-generated speech mistakenly referred to her as the investor of the year instead of the innovator of the year, causing the crowd to laugh. The speech also playfully mentioned Louis-Dreyfus’s roles in films associated with Julia Roberts, prompting laughter from the audience and social media users.

The incident highlights the occasional challenges and inaccuracies of AI language models like ChatGPT-4, despite advancements in AI technology. Similar incidents of AI tools making errors have garnered attention, including a highly anticipated rival to ChatGPT-4 providing an incorrect answer during a demo and a New York lawyer facing consequences for using ChatGPT in submitting a brief with fictitious cases seemingly fabricated by the chatbot. Additionally, OpenAI co-founder and CEO Sam Altman expressed optimism about addressing the hallucination problem in AI language models.

Louis-Dreyfus concluded her acceptance speech by underlining the unique capabilities of humans in innovation and entertainment, emphasizing that “In the end, folks, it’s the humans who do the innovating and the entertaining.”

The incident with Louis-Dreyfus and ChatGPT-4 is just one example of the challenges that AI language models can face, and the limitations they may exhibit in capturing the nuances of creative expression. Despite the complexity and occasional errors, AI technology continues to advance, with companies like OpenAI working to improve the accuracy and capabilities of AI language models.

As the AI landscape continues to evolve, it remains to be seen how these systems will be refined and improved to better accommodate the complexities of human creativity and expression. The incident with Louis-Dreyfus at the WSJ. Magazine 2023 Innovator Awards serves as a reminder of the ongoing process of innovation and adaptation in the realm of AI technology and its interaction with human creativity and expression.
