Highest Voter Turnout in 66 Years Seen in MP at 76.22%

Madhya Pradesh Breaks Records with 76.22% Voter Turnout in Assembly Polls

Madhya Pradesh has set a new record with a 76.22 per cent voter turnout in the single-phase polls to 230 assembly seats, marking the highest turnout in 66 years. Seoni, Balaghat, and Agar recorded the highest voter turnouts at 85.68 per cent, 85.23 per cent, and 85.03 per cent, respectively. Shajapur and Rajgarh also saw high turnouts at 84.99 per cent and 84.29 per cent.

Election Commission data shows that 18 districts saw over 80 per cent voter turnout, while 19 districts recorded above 75 per cent. However, Alirajpur district had the lowest turnout at 60.10 per cent. The major city of Indore recorded a 70.54 per cent voter turnout, followed by Bhopal at 66 per cent, Jabalpur at 74.30 per cent, and Gwalior at 67.1 per cent.

In a remarkable instance in the Naxal-hit Balaghat district, Sonewani polling station, classified as Particularly Vulnerable Tribal Groups area, saw a 100 per cent voter turnout, displaying a concerted effort to facilitate voting among tribal communities.

Out of 2,533 candidates, a third-gender candidate from Malhara, Chhatarpur district, is in contention. Among the 230 seats, 148 are general category, while 35 seats are reserved for SC and 47 for ST category.

In addition to the impressive voter turnout in Madhya Pradesh, the state also experienced serious incidents of violence during the assembly polls. The BJP candidate from Rajnagar, Chhatarpur district, Arvind Pateriya, was booked for murder and his men were involved in a case where a Congress councillor was killed.

Other instances of violence were reported from Morena, Bhind, Jabalpur, Indore, and Bhopal, with the BJP candidate from the Mehgaon seat in Bhind district suffering minor injuries due to stone pelting.
