EU launches probe into child safety measures on TikTok and YouTube

Posted on November 10, 2023 By Haley Bennett

EU Investigates Safety Measures of YouTube and TikTok for Minors, Requires Detailed Information

The European Union (EU) has recently taken steps to probe into the safety measures adopted by YouTube and TikTok to protect minors, as part of the investigations initiated under the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA). According to the European Commission’s formal request, both video-sharing platforms are required to provide detailed information on their efforts to comply with the DSA, particularly concerning the protection of minors and the responsible dissemination of online content.

Under the DSA, digital platforms are subject to fines amounting to six percent of their global turnover for any violations detected. This move by the EU emphasizes the accountability of influential tech companies in safeguarding users, especially minors. It also aims to ensure that online content does not pose potential risks to the mental and physical health of children.

The information sought from TikTok and YouTube includes details on their efforts to fulfill their obligations under the DSA, such as executing risk assessments, implementing mitigation measures, and understanding how minors utilize these platforms. Both platforms are required to provide the requested information to the European Commission by November 30, failing which, they may face penalties under the DSA.

As Very Large Online Platforms, TikTok and YouTube are obligated to adhere to the comprehensive provisions outlined in the DSA. This includes assessing and mitigating risks associated with the dissemination of illegal and harmful content and ensuring the protection of minors’ rights.

TikTok had previously received a request for information on concerns related to the spread of terrorist and violent content, hate speech, alleged disinformation, and broader aspects concerning the protection of minors online.

The EU’s prompt action reflects its commitment to regulating major tech entities and ensuring the responsible use of online platforms, especially when it comes to protecting the welfare of children.
