Does the ICC show favoritism towards India in World Cups? Is India always scheduled to play the final group matches in order to maintain a favorable net run rate? What is the reality behind these claims?

Posted on November 13, 2023 By Haley Bennett

India secured a resounding victory over the Netherlands in the last group fixture of the 2023 World Cup, further solidifying their position as a favorite to win the tournament. Batting first, India’s top 5 batters scored impressively, with Shreyas Iyer and KL Rahul both securing centuries, leading India to their highest score of the tournament, 410/4. The Dutch chase fell short at 250, as they struggled to keep up with the required run rate. This win marked India’s ninth consecutive victory in the tournament, showcasing their dominance on the cricket field.

However, controversy surrounding the scheduling of India’s matches arose, with journalist Daniel Alexander accusing the ICC of favoritism towards India. While the BCCI holds significant power within the ICC, claims of intentional scheduling to favor India are unfounded. In fact, India playing the last group stage match is not a unique occurrence, as it has not happened in any World Cup post-2000, except in 2011. Similar occurrences were present in T20 World Cups and the Champions Trophy, further dispelling accusations of bias.

Looking forward, India and Australia are among the top favorites to win the 2023 World Cup title. With odds in their favor, the anticipation for an exciting finish to the tournament is palpable. As cricket fans gear up for the conclusion of the World Cup, betting opportunities are abound, offering a chance to win big. The quest for victory continues, and the cricket world eagerly awaits the crowning of the 2023 World Cup champion.
