New Zealand advances to World Cup 2023 semifinals as Pakistan is eliminated

Posted on November 11, 2023 By Haley Bennett

Pakistan’s World Cup exit confirmed at England’s batting triumph

On Saturday at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata, England won the toss and chose to bat first, sealing Pakistan’s exit from the World Cup. Pakistan would have to chase down England’s target in 2.3 overs to surpass New Zealand on the points table, a virtually impossible feat, leading Babar Azam and Co. to return to Islamabad after the match.

Even if Pakistan chased down a score of 300 by England, they would need to do it within six overs, making it impossible for them to surpass New Zealand’s net run rate. Pakistan’s World Cup campaign has been filled with disappointment, losing four of their eight matches, including a defeat to Afghanistan.

Disheartened by the poor performance, Babar Azam is reportedly considering stepping down as the captain of white-ball cricket. Seeking guidance from his close circle, including former PCB chairman Ramiz Raja and his father, Babar is contemplating his future course of action.

Close aides have suggested relinquishing leadership in all three formats due to the challenges faced by prominent captains in the past, especially against Australia away from home. This decision seems to be influenced by Pakistan’s struggles in the longer format of the game in recent history.

While fans anticipated an India-Pakistan encounter in the final four, their hopes were dashed as Pakistan was knocked out of the World Cup. Instead, India is set to play New Zealand in the semifinals on November 15 at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai.

During the group stage match between India and New Zealand, New Zealand scored 273 batting first, which India successfully chased down with two overs to spare thanks to a strong performance by Virat Kohli. The World Cup semifinal clash between India and New Zealand is scheduled to start at 2:00 PM IST and will be broadcasted live on Star Sports Network in multiple languages.

For Indian audience, the match can also be live streamed on Disney+ Hotstar. Additionally, cricket enthusiasts can place their predictions on the Cricket World Cup using platforms like Dafabet to win prizes and stay updated with the latest odds, bets, and cricket scores from India.
