Rashid Latif criticizes Virat Kohli’s aggressive behavior on the field, deeming it unsuitable for a player of his high stature.

Posted on November 7, 2023 By Haley Bennett

India emerged victorious in the 37th match of the ODI World Cup 2023 against South Africa by a massive margin of 243 runs. The thrilling encounter took place at the iconic Eden Gardens in Kolkata. Powered by an outstanding century by Virat Kohli, the home team posted a formidable total of 326 runs while batting first. Kohli’s century in this match was his 49th in ODIs, equalling the record set by the legendary Sachin Tendulkar.

Meanwhile, in the second innings, Ravindra Jadeja showcased his brilliance as he wreaked havoc on the South African batting lineup. Jadeja dismissed five Proteas batsmen, leading to their downfall and bundling them out for just 83 runs. This defeat marked South Africa’s second loss in the ongoing World Cup.

However, amidst the celebrations, there were some differing opinions regarding Kohli’s on-field aggression. Former Pakistani cricketer Rashid Latif criticized Kohli’s behavior, expressing his belief that a player of Kohli’s stature should not display such aggression during matches. Latif shared his thoughts during an interview with a Pakistani news channel, stating, “He (Kohli) has scored 49 centuries in fewer innings than Sachin. However, he plays cricket in a different style, showing a lot of aggression on the field. It does not look appropriate and does not suit a player of such high stature.”

Latif also discussed the roles assigned to Indian players in the tournament. He cited examples of Rohit Sharma and Kohli to illustrate his point, stating that Sharma takes it upon himself to score big runs and hit boundaries, while Kohli’s job is to bat till the end of the innings and focus on occupying the crease. This strategic approach seems to be paying off for India, as they have registered eight consecutive wins in this World Cup, displaying dominant performances. Even if India suffers a defeat in their final match against the Netherlands, they will secure the top position in the points table.

Looking ahead, India appears to be the favorites to win the ODI World Cup 2023 according to the Dafabet odds. Their odds stand at 2.00 for clinching the title. Australia follows closely behind with odds of 4.50, while South Africa and New Zealand have odds of 5.50 and 10.00 respectively. Pakistan lags behind with odds of 26.00.
