Mikel Arteta confirms Emile Smith Rowe’s injury will keep Arsenal midfielder out for ‘weeks’ following ‘painful’ loss to West Ham.

Arsenal Midfielder Emile Smith Rowe Sidelined with Knee Injury

Arsenal midfielder Emile Smith Rowe will be out for several weeks due to a knee injury, according to manager Mikel Arteta. The injury occurred during Smith Rowe’s first Premier League appearance of the season, which ended in a 3-1 defeat against West Ham United in the Carabao Cup.

Smith Rowe, who recently set up Eddie Nketiah’s hat-trick goal in a 5-0 victory over Sheffield United, has been plagued with injuries in the past. Last season, he underwent groin surgery, causing him to miss a significant portion of the campaign.

Arteta expressed his concern over Smith Rowe’s latest setback, saying, “He’s going to be out for weeks.” The midfielder’s absence adds to the disappointment of Arsenal’s exit from the Carabao Cup, where they had a four-match winning streak prior to the defeat to West Ham.

Arteta attributed the loss to his team’s failure to execute basic elements of the game. With several players making rare appearances and key players starting on the bench, Arsenal struggled to find their rhythm. West Ham took advantage of the situation, ending their winless run against Arsenal, which dated back to January 2019.

Reflecting on the defeat, Arteta admitted his disappointment and took responsibility for the team’s performance. He stated, “I’m disappointed in myself because I wanted to play a certain way and we haven’t managed to do that.” The manager also acknowledged the challenge of expecting players with limited minutes to perform at their best in a different competition.

Despite having the majority of attempts on goal in the first half, Arsenal failed to produce consistent threats. Arteta highlighted the need for improvement in the final third, emphasizing the number of giveaways and the lack of danger posed to the opposition.

Arteta briefly mentioned goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale’s performance, supporting his claim that he was impeded during West Ham’s opening goal. However, he stressed that the team should have done better, regardless of specific incidents.

Looking ahead, Arsenal aims to extend their unbeaten start in the Premier League to 11 matches. They will face Newcastle United, currently in sixth place, in their upcoming fixture. Arteta hopes to use the disappointment of the Carabao Cup exit as motivation for the upcoming match.

In terms of Smith Rowe’s injury, Arsenal will have to cope without his contributions for the coming weeks. With the midfielder sidelined, the team will need to rely on other players to step up and fill the void.
