Rephrase the title:’Utter rubbish’ – Michael Vaughan dismisses ‘Bazball’ claims over Joe Root dismissal

On Saturday, India took on England on day three of the third Test match, with the series level at 1-1, and the match finely poised as the visitors were trailing by 237 with eight wickets in hand.

India were rocked the previous night thanks to the news that lead spinner R Ashwin had pulled out from the remainder of the match, having to deal with a family emergency. Just hours earlier, he had become the second Indian to pick up 500 Test wickets.

Pacer Jasprit Bumrah got the first breakthrough of the morning on day three, after Joe Root attempted to reverse scoop him over third man but the subsequent edge only went to Yashasvi Jaiswal at second slip.

Michael Vaughan rubbishes ‘Bazball’ claims over Joe Root dismissal

Root’s dismissal sparked a debate among fans and experts alike, given the high-risk nature of his shot. English commentator Piers Morgan defended Root, saying England’s ‘Bazball’ style of play meant that the team’s high-tempo style of play meant Root playing an aggressive shot was not a mistake.

In response, former England captain Michael Vaughan called Morgan’s assessment ‘utter rubbish’, pointing to captain Ben Stokes’ method of more traditional Test batting as a template for Root to follow. He added that sport was about changing styles at the right time.

Utter rubbish piers .. the skipper doesn’t Bazball .. he plays the situation .. Joe is far too good to gift India such a cheap wicket 20 mins into a crucial day when they are down to 10 players .. Sport is about changing styles at the right time .. https://t.co/e5mTxriTFq

Root’s batting in general has come under the scanner on this tour, with many of the opinion that he should be encouraged to play more traditionally while the other batters ‘Bazball’ around him. However, statictics seem to suggest that the reverse scoop in particular is not a shot Root plays without being aware of its risks, as well as its rewards.

As per ESPNcricinfo data, before today, Root had scored 60 off 22 balls with reverse sweeps/scoops against fast bowlers in Test cricket, with one dismissal.
