England’s Ollie Pope then put on an exhibition, scoring a magnificent 196 and ensuring, in the company of the lower order, that India were set a competitive 231 to chase. Debutant spinner Tom Hartley then took over, spinning a web to take 7/62 and clinch the win.

How have India performed in Test matches without Virat Kohli?

Ahead of the first Test, much of the attention was on the absences on either side; Harry Brook and Shoaib Bashir for England, and Virat Kohli for India. The India star had pulled out of the first two matches due to personal reasons, and so will miss the Vizag Test starting on Friday as well. Whenever a batter of Kohli’s calibre is not available, it is a big blow to any team. But how have India fared in his absence so far?

Kohli’s Test debut came on June 20, 2011 against West Indies in Kingston where he scored 4 & 15, as India won by 63 runs. Including that match, India have played 127 Tests since then, with Kohli taking part in 113 of them, missing 14.

India’s Test record with and without Virat Kohli
  Matches Wins Draws Losses
With Kohli 113 59 21 33
Without Kohli 15 7 2 6
Total 128 65 23 39

After the debut series in West Indies, Kohli was part of India’s squad for the 2011 tour of England, but did not play a single match as India lost 4-0. He also sat out the next series, West Indies’ tour of India, meaning he missed 6 Tests in a row.

However, Kohli next missed a Test match in 2017, as India defeated Australia in Dharamsala by 8 wickets in his absence and since then has only missed a game or two, in large part due to personal reasons or workload management. Sunday’s result marked the first time ever that India at lost a Test match at home without him.
