Basit Ali urges for immediate resignation of PCB chief selector Inzamam-ul-Haq

Posted on October 30, 2023 By Haley Bennett

Pakistan’s hopes of qualifying for the World Cup semifinals suffered a blow with a narrow 1-wicket loss to South Africa in Chennai last Friday. Despite posting a competitive total of 270 runs in the first innings, Pakistan struggled to maintain their momentum in the second innings. Aiden Markram’s impressive knock of 91 put South Africa on track for victory. However, Pakistan regained control after Markram’s dismissal, only to be defeated by South Africa’s last wicket pair of Tabraiz Shamsi and Keshav Maharaj.

Since the disappointing result, there has been ongoing turmoil within the Pakistan cricket team. The drama took another twist on Sunday night as Basit Ali, a former Pakistan international, called for Inzamam-ul-Haq to resign immediately. Ali made these remarks during his appearance on ARY News’ program “Har Lamha Purjosh,” responding to statements made by PCB chairman Zaka Ashraf in a recent interview. Ashraf had raised concerns about the influence that certain management companies hold over the team, suggesting that they have a role in team selection. Ali criticized Ashraf for making such claims publicly without conducting a proper investigation.

Ali had previously stated that Pakistan captain Babar Azam should step down from his role, insinuating that the team’s administrative issues were affecting his performance.

Looking ahead to the 2023 World Cup, India, Australia, and South Africa are considered the top favorites. The current odds from Dafabet for the tournament are as follows:

– India: 2.15

– South Africa: 4.75

In conclusion, Pakistan’s loss to South Africa has put their World Cup semifinal qualification hopes in jeopardy. The aftermath has been filled with controversy, with calls for resignations from key figures in the cricket administration. Meanwhile, cricket enthusiasts are already speculating about the favorites for the next World Cup and placing their bets accordingly.
