Celebrities Like Elon Musk and Ryan Gosling Exploited by Scammers in McAfee Report on Malware Campaigns

Posted on October 28, 2023 By Haley Bennett

Canadian actor Ryan Gosling has been named the most exploited celebrity by scammers, according to a recent report from online security company McAfee. The report highlights the practice of cybercriminals leveraging well-known celebrity names to lure unsuspecting users into downloading harmful content. Alongside Gosling, renowned entrepreneur Elon Musk also appears on the list.

Gosling’s rise to the top of the list can be attributed to his starring role in the summer blockbuster “Barbie.” As the film’s popularity grew, so did the exploitation of Gosling’s name by scammers. McAfee previously reported that cybercriminals distributed movie downloads containing hidden malware along with the film.

The ongoing searches for Gosling can also be linked to his portrayal of Ken in “Barbie,” which led to his inclusion in the Billboard Hot 100 chart. Additionally, Ken and Barbie costumes became popular choices for Halloween outfits in 2023.

Following Gosling on the list is actress Emily Blunt, known for her role in the film “Oppenheimer.” Jennifer Lopez occupies the third spot, followed by Zendaya and actor Kevin Costner. It is worth noting that three stars from the movie “Barbie” also appear on the list, including Margot Robbie at number eight and America Ferrera at number ten.

Here is McAfee’s complete Hacker Celebrity Hotlist:

1. Ryan Gosling
2. Emily Blunt
3. Jennifer Lopez
4. Zendaya
5. Kevin Costner
6. Elon Musk
7. Al Roker
8. Margot Robbie
9. Bad Bunny
10. America Ferrera

The list features a diverse mix of established and recently celebrated personalities. Gosling’s ranking as the most exploited celebrity serves as a reminder of the importance of online security and staying vigilant while searching for celebrities online.

It is advised to exercise caution and ensure the safety of personal data, privacy, and identity. Cybercriminals continue to exploit the fame and popularity of celebrities, making it crucial for individuals to be aware of potential risks.

In related news, Apple is reportedly preparing to launch new MacBook Pro and iMac models later this month, alongside AI features for iOS 18, Siri, and Apple Music.
