Which One Comes Out on Top in Terms of Features and Performance: OnePlus Open or Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5?

Posted on October 20, 2023 By Haley Bennett

Chinese smartphone manufacturer OnePlus has made a bold move by launching its highly anticipated foldable smartphone, OnePlus Open, in the global market. The launch took place at the ‘Open for Everything’ event held in Mumbai BKC on October 20. This puts OnePlus in direct competition with the dominant leader in the foldable category, the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5, which was introduced in July of the same year. Let’s take a closer look at both smartphones and see which one comes out on top.

Starting with the specifications, here are the details for both devices:

OnePlus Open:
– Main Display: 7.82-inch Flexi-fluid AMOLED, 1-120 Hz dynamic refresh rate
– Cover Screen: 6.31-inch Super Fluid AMOLED, 10-120 Hz dynamic refresh rate
– Processor: Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 2
– RAM: 16GB LPDDR5X
– ROM: 512GB UFS 4.0
– Battery: 4,805 mAh with Dual-cell, 67W SUPERVOOC Charging
– Main Camera: 48 MP (f/1.7 Sony LYT-T808 lens)
– Camera Features: OIS, HDR, EIS
– OS Updates: Four years of Android updates
– Selfie Camera: 20MP f/2.2 with fixed focus; Secondary: 32MP f/2.4 with fixed focus

Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5:
– Main Display: 7.6-inch QXGA+ Dynamic AMOLED 2X
– Cover Screen: 6.2-inch HD+ Dynamic AMOLED 2X Display
– Processor: Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 2
– RAM: 12GB LPDDR5X
– ROM: 1TB
– Battery: 4,400mAh with 25W Fast Charging
– Main Camera: 12MP ultra wide, 50MP wide, 10MP telephoto
– Camera Features: OIS, HDR, EIS
– OS Updates: Four years
– Selfie Camera: 10MP with 85° FOV, 4MP Under Display Camera

Now let’s compare the prices of both smartphones:

The OnePlus Open is priced at Rs 1,39,999, while the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5 starts at Rs 1,54,999 for the 256GB storage option. This intensifies the competition in the foldable smartphone category.

Moving on to design, the OnePlus Open comes with a sleeker profile and an almost invisible crease on the foldable screen. Unlike the Galaxy Z Fold 5, the crease is hardly noticeable, even when using the smartphone. The cover display of the OnePlus Open is nearly the size of a regular phone, allowing users to use it without unfolding the device. On the other hand, the Galaxy Z Fold 5 is sturdy and IPX8-rated with a thickness of 0.53 inches when closed. The OnePlus Open is slightly slimmer at 0.46 inches, presenting a well-built design.

In terms of camera capabilities, OnePlus takes a fresh and innovative approach with its inaugural foldable smartphone. It sports a 48MP main camera, a 64MP telephoto lens with 3x optical zoom, and a 48MP ultra-wide lens, promising great performance. The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5, on the other hand, maintains a more conservative approach with a 50MP main camera, a 12MP ultra-wide camera, and a 10MP telephoto lens. While the cameras on the Galaxy Z Fold 5 have been reliable, OnePlus’s camera setup offers more potential for advancements and upgrades.

In conclusion, the OnePlus Open impresses with its design, camera features, and performance. It poses a strong competition to the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5. However, both smartphones offer similar specifications and performance. When it comes to choosing between the two, the OnePlus Open emerges as the winner due to its exquisite design and virtually invisible crease on the foldable screen. Additionally, it comes at a more budget-friendly price. With a balance between aesthetics and functionality, the OnePlus Open is the clear choice for consumers.
