Apple’s latest ‘Scary Fast’ event not only introduced the new MacBook Pro, but also unveiled a new iMac. While the M3 chip powers this all-in-one desktop computer, it may appear similar to its predecessor.
The 2021 iMac underwent a significant overhaul, incorporating a fresh design and the M1 chip. The transition to Apple Silicon enabled a thin iMac design and introduced color options, increased display size to 24 inches, and featured Spatial Audio-enabled speakers with Dolby Atmos support.
The standout feature of the 2023 iMac is the M3 chip. This new M3 chip draws from the A17 Pro found in the iPhone 15 Pro, leveraging 3-nanometer technology to enhance energy efficiency and performance. Apple claims the M3 is up to 2 times faster than the M1. The base M3 model includes an 8-core CPU, an 8-core GPU, and 8 GB of RAM, with an option to upgrade to a version featuring a 10-core GPU for superior graphics performance.
Unlike the M1, the M3 introduces hardware-accelerated ray tracing and mesh shading for improved 3D object rendering. Users can also configure the M3 with up to 24 GB of RAM, compared to the M1’s maximum of 16 GB.
Connectivity receives an upgrade with the new iMac, transitioning from Wi-Fi 6 to Wi-Fi 6E. Wi-Fi 6E operates on the more robust 6GHz spectrum, making it less susceptible to signal interference. Bluetooth is also updated from the 5.0 standard to 5.3, offering improved security and signal stability.
Here’s a breakdown of what’s new and what’s old in the 2023 M3 iMac:
