Sri Lanka Cricket Suspended by ICC
Just a day after Sri Lanka’s disappointing end to their 2023 Cricket World Cup campaign, the International Cricket Council (ICC) announced the suspension of Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC), effective immediately. The decision was made due to SLC’s failure to manage its affairs autonomously and allowing government interference in its administration.
According to an official statement from the ICC, the organization’s Board determined that SLC is in serious breach of its obligations as a member, particularly in relation to government interference in the governance, regulation, and administration of cricket in Sri Lanka. The conditions of the suspension will be decided by the ICC Board in the future.
The move comes after the Sri Lankan parliament passed a resolution to sack the entire SLC board following Sri Lanka’s final Cricket World Cup match loss. This decision was supported by both ruling and opposition parties.
As a result of the suspension, Sri Lankan cricket teams, including the men’s and women’s national teams and the youth teams, were not allowed to participate in ICC-governed competitions. However, on November 21, the ICC confirmed that Sri Lankan teams could play in bilateral and ICC events, with the funding of the SLC to be controlled by the ICC.
This decision also affected the upcoming men’s U19 World Cup, which was scheduled to be held in Sri Lanka in January 2024. The tournament has been moved to South Africa instead.
Sri Lanka’s poor performance in the 2023 Cricket World Cup added to the challenges they were facing off the field. The team finished ninth out of ten teams, managing to secure four points from nine matches. Wins against England and the Netherlands were overshadowed by seven losses, including a humiliating defeat by India, where they were bowled out for just 55 runs.
Meanwhile, as the cricket world looks ahead to the conclusion of the World Cup, India and Australia are among the favorites to win the title. The odds are as follows:
-India: 1.95
-Australia: 4.50
-South Africa: 5.50
-New Zealand: 7.50
-Pakistan: 301.00
As the tournament progresses, cricket fans can place their bets on the potential outcome of the 2023 World Cup, as selected regions can access the betting options.
