Gujarat Titans (GT) have announced the appointment of India batter Shubman Gill as the captain for the upcoming season of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024. This decision comes after the return of Hardik Pandya to Mumbai Indians (MI).
In a statement, Gujarat Titans described Gill as the ideal choice to lead the team, emphasizing his impressive track record and his role in the team’s success since its debut in the IPL. Gill’s remarkable performance includes scoring 1373 runs in 33 innings at an average of 47.34, with three centuries and eight fifties. Last season, he achieved a monumental feat by slamming 890 runs in 17 matches at an average of 59.33 and was also named the Orange Cap winner.
Expressing his enthusiasm for the new role, Gill stated, “I am delighted and proud to assume the captaincy of Gujarat Titans and thank the franchise for their trust in me to lead such a fine team. We have had two exceptional seasons and I keenly look forward to leading the team with our exciting brand of cricket.”
Gujarat Titans have had a remarkable journey in the IPL, winning the title in their debut season and reaching the finals in the following season. Notably, Gill’s performance has been outstanding, with three centuries in the last IPL, placing him among the top batters in the tournament’s history.
Meanwhile, the team bid farewell to Hardik Pandya, who moved back to his first franchise, Mumbai Indians, following a trade between the two franchises. Pandya played a pivotal role in GT’s success, with the team achieving a fairytale start in the debut season and finishing as runners-up in the second season.
