Director of “Dhoom,” Sanjay Gadhvi, Passes Away at 56
Prolific film director Sanjay Gadhvi has tragically passed away early on Sunday morning at his home, according to his elder daughter Sanjina. Gadhvi, who was just a few days shy of his 57th birthday, is best known for directing two major blockbuster hits in the “Dhoom” franchise produced by Yash Raj Films — “Dhoom” (2004) and “Dhoom 2” (2006). According to Gadhvi’s daughter, the director was in “perfectly healthy” before he passed away at 9:30 am. It is suspected that it might have been a heart attack, but there was no indication of any prior illness.
Gadhvi began his directorial career in 2000 with “Tere Liye”, followed by the 2002 film “Mere Yaar Ki Shaadi Hai”. In a statement from YRF, the studio expressed their condolences, emphasizing that the “magic Gadhvi created on screen will be cherished forever”. “May his soul rest in peace. #SanjayGadhvi,” the statement read.
The late director gained wide acclaim with his third project, “Dhoom”, which sparked a motorbiking sensation among Indian youth in the early 2000s. The film was centered around a cat and mouse game between a gang of motorbike robbers and a Mumbai cop, and it led to the successful “Dhoom” film series.
Aside from the “Dhoom” franchise, Gadhvi also directed other films like “Kidnap” (2008), “Ajab Gazabb Love” (2012), and “Operation Parindey”, which was his final directorial release in 2020. Gadhvi is survived by his wife, another daughter, and his daughter Sanjina.
Gadhvi’s sudden passing has sent shockwaves throughout the Indian film industry, prompting an outpouring of grief and tributes from colleagues and friends. Actor Abhishek Bachchan expressed his disbelief and grief, stating his deep appreciation for the late director’s support and the impact of their work together.
Bipasha Basu, who starred in “Dhoom 2”, also shared her condolences, expressing that Gadhvi was gone too soon. “The third installment of “Dhoom” was directed by Vijay Krishna Acharya, featuring Bachchan, Chopra, Aamir Khan, and Katrina Kaif.
Shibasish Sarkar, president of the Producers Guild of India, also conveyed his shock and condolences over Gadhvi’s passing. Other film personalities, like Kunal Kohli and Tusshar Kapoor, also mourned the loss of Gadhvi, paying tribute to his contributions to the Indian film industry.
