Indian captain Rohit Sharma equaled the record for hitting the most ODI sixes in a calendar year, previously held by South Africa’s AB de Villiers. This feat was achieved during the ICC Men’s ODI World Cup 2023 match against South Africa at the iconic Eden Gardens.
Surpassing West Indies’ Chris Gayle, who had hit 56 sixes in 2019, Rohit Sharma now secures the second position on the list. It took the 36-year-old 23 innings to reach this milestone, five more than de Villiers.
During his innings of 40 runs, Rohit Sharma hit two sixes off Lungi Ngidi, taking his tally to 58 sixes. However, he was eventually dismissed by Kagiso Rabada in the sixth over after being caught out by Temba Bavuma.
Opting to bat first, India made an impressive start with Rohit Sharma showcasing his aggressive batting against the South African pacers. The Indian team reached a score of 50 in just 4.3 overs.
In the powerplay, India finished on a formidable total of 91 for 1. This is the second-highest score conceded by South Africa in the first 10 overs of the tournament. Previously, they had given away 94 for 2 against Sri Lanka.
At the time of writing this article, India’s innings stood at 293/5 in 47 overs. The team is displaying a strong performance in the ongoing match.
