Gurugram Administration Suspends Classes to Protect Children from Rising Pollution in NCR
In an effort to safeguard school children from the escalating pollution levels in the National Capital Region (NCR), the Gurugram administration has taken the decision to suspend classes from nursery to class five until further notice. Following suit, Faridabad’s Deputy Commissioner Vikram Singh has also ordered the closure of schools for children from class one to five, effective from Tuesday until November 12.
Over the past week, the Air Quality Index (AQI) in Gurugram district has reached an “extremely dangerous” level, reaching 412 on Monday. Consequently, the industrial district has now secured the fifth position amongst the most polluted cities in the country.
Chairman of the Gurugram District Disaster Management Authority, Nishant Kumar Yadav, and Gurugram’s Deputy Commissioner, issued the order on Monday, emphasizing the need for online studies to ensure that students’ education remains uninterrupted. This directive applies to all private and government educational institutions in the district, commencing from November 7, until further notice.
Yadav stated that the continuous rise in the air quality index has prompted the implementation of the GRAP IV stage. Previously, the Haryana government had instructed deputy commissioners in the NCR to evaluate the situation in their respective districts and make a decision regarding school closures. In recent days, several districts, including Gurugram, have witnessed a classification of “severe” in the AQI.
The pollution levels in Delhi-NCR on Monday morning remained at an alarming seven to eight times above the government-prescribed safe limit. The noxious haze has persisted over the region for seven consecutive days, exacerbating the pollution crisis.
Efforts are being made to protect the well-being of school children by temporarily suspending classes and resorting to online education as a means of ensuring continuous learning amidst the critical environmental situation.
