On January 3, Australia took on Pakistan in the third and final Test of their bilateral series at the Sydney Cricket Ground.

The visitors were struggling at 47/4, before keeper Mohammad Rizwan and captain Shan Masood got together to resurrect the innings, scoring 88 and 35 respectively. Number nine Aamer Jamal then stepped up to score 82 and take his side to 313.

However, there was some confusion when Masood was dismissed by Aussie pacer Mitchell Marsh, thanks to a broadcasting error.

What happened when Mitchell Marsh took the wicket of Shan Masood in Sydney?

In the 26th over of the innings, Marsh pitched one on a length to Masood, drawing an edge to a slip fielder. However, replays showed that the bowler had overstepped, and Masood was reprieved. In the 30th over, Marsh once again induced an edge off Masood with an almost identical delivery, this time with his foot deemed to be behind the line.

However, the initial replays of the wicket created some confusion, as they showed Masood to be standing at the non-striker’s end.

Amid exaggerated suggestions of some shady business, the truth emerged after a while. The replay image that had come up initially was of the previous delivery, when Masood was indeed at the non-striker’s end and the footage had just been used by the third umpire to review a run-out appeal. It was accidentally pulled up by the broadcaster.

A subsequent comparison replay between Marsh’s no-ball and the wicket ball displayed the correct footage, with Mohammad Rizwan at the non-striker’s end.
