On Thursday, England and India faced off in the first Test of their five-match bilateral series at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium in Hyderabad.

England captain Ben Stokes won the toss and chose to bat on a dry surface. Openers Ben Duckett and Zak Crawley took an aggressive approach, putting on 55 in 11.5 overs. However, India’s spinners struck at regular intervals to bowl the visitors out for 246, Stokes top-scoring with 70.
In reply, India’s Yashasvi Jaiswal batted with ferocious intent, hitting debutant Tom Hartley for six off the spinner’s first delivery. He raced to 76* off 70 balls by the close of play, with India 119/1 and firmly in the driver’s seat.
Why will Bazball not be successful in India? Former Pakistan international Rashid Latif explains the surprising reason
All eyes were on England’s approach to their batting, with many waiting to see how their attacking, ‘Bazball’ style of play would fare in India. Towards the end of the day’s play, former Pakistan wicket-keeper Rashid Latif took to X (formerly Twitter) to explain why he thought it would not succeed consistently in Indian conditions.
Why the Bazball phenomenon will not be consistently successful?
England’s style of bazball may not work in India because the SG ball, weather and the pitch condition, favors Indian quality spinners.

Latif illustrated the difference in the cricket balls manufactured in India (SG), England (Duke’s) and Australia (Kookaburra). England’s hard-hitting style has largely been successful in home conditions, playing with the Duke’s ball.
However, the SG ball is stitched with a more prominent seam than the Duke’s ball. This is due to the fact that the ball needs to be more durable thanks to the relatively abrasive surfaces in the subcontinent.
The Duke’s ball will swing (i.e. move in the air) for longer due to the extra lacquer on its surface, but the SG ball will deviate more off the pitch because of the seam. This plays into the hands of India’s spinners, who can turn the ball more as a result. In addition, movement off the pitch is more difficult to play than movement in the air as batters have less time to react.
England have also had success with Bazball on Australian and South African pitches, as the machine-stitching of the Kookaburra ball means the seam is more embedded in the ball. When the seam is as prominent as the SG ball’s, it could be that the risk-reward balance of their aggressive style is disturbed, to the point where it is no longer worth it to play in that fashion.
